30 Years of Youth Skateboard Culture

Sometimes, it feels like if Santa Cruz had a mascot, it would be the Screaming Hand. It’s big. It’s blue. It’s in every window of every skate shop in town. On every skateboard of every new and seasoned skater at Derby Park.

For thirty years it has been a representation of youth and skateboard culture in Santa Cruz.

This fall, the Screaming Hand will take over the MAH.

After an international tour, this tribute to the iconic Screaming Hand will be landing at its home base in Santa Cruz. This is a huge celebration of the artist Jim Phillips featuring over 200 pieces of art inspired by Screaming Hand.

Celebrate the iconic Screaming Hand image and its creator Jim Phillips in this collaboration with NHS. Explore original art by Phillips and 200 other contemporary artists influenced by this fundamental image of skate culture.

Graphic artist Jim Phillips is best known for his surf and skateboard art. Born in San Jose in 1944, Jim has been a local resident of Santa Cruz for most of his life. He was Art Director at NHS in the 1970s and 1980s where he created thousands of decks, t-shirts, stickers, product illustrations and advertisements.
