American Lung Association in California Statement on AB 32 Scoping Plan

SACRAMENTO – The American Lung Association in California issued the following statement regarding the release of the AB 32 Scoping Plan Draft – a roadmap to reach the state’s landmark clean energy and climate law (AB 32) goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020:

“The AB 32 Scoping Plan draft helps steer California to a future of clean air and healthier families. From our perspective, there is an urgent need to lock-in improvements that will make California a healthier place to live, work and breathe. We envision a state with healthy air, more walkable neighborhoods, safe places for children to play outside, fewer miles driven and more transit options, and cleaner vehicles and fuels. The scoping plan is an essential document that maps out the direction our state will take to reach these goals.

While we would like the Scoping Plan to incorporate a stronger commitment to more specific reduction targets for each program, we believe the plan is moving in the right direction.  We urge the California Air Resources Board to continue to develop research and analyses on the health impacts of climate change and land use planning decisions to better inform state and local decisions. The Scoping Plan offers a great way to chart a path toward a cleaner California over the next two decades and beyond –to 2050—one with less air pollution, more breathable air and healthier families.”
