BOULDER CREEK – For the next 10 weeks a team from AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) will begin to assist the Little Basin Campground in trail and campground maintenance. Little Basin, once a retreat and campground for Hewlett Packard employees, is a 534-acre California State Park campground that was recently added to Big Basin Redwoods State Park through a collaborative endeavor with the Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST) and the Sempervirens Fund.
Through an innovative approach in park operations and a public/private partnership, Little Basin is owned and operated by United Camps, Conferences and Retreats, Web of Life Field. The camp stands to provide the people of California a place to exercise and learn about the ecology of the flora and fauna in the park. Their mission is to provide a space for healthy living, inspiration, and education.
During their time at Little Basin, the AmeriCorps NCCC team will be working on a variety of projects. One of those projects is to help with the maintenance and upkeep of the campgrounds and trails. This will be accomplished through various construction projects, brush clearing, and campground deep cleaning. Occasionally the team will be leading interpretive and educational hikes for those visiting Little Basin. The team will also be helping the staff prepare for the Little Basin 25th Anniversary Celebration. The team hopes that they can assist in ensuring all that visit have a rewarding experience, as well as spreading awareness of the camp’s existence.
Corps member Erin Huffnagle said, “I sincerely hope that our service gives people the opportunity to discover more about Little Basin and the Redwoods in general.”
The AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) and its FEMA Corps units engage 2,800 young Americans in a full-time, 10-month commitment to service each year. For more information, visit NationalService.gov.
