Art teachers in the 20th Congressional District represented by U.S. Rep. Jimmy Panetta (D-Carmel Valley) have until April 30 to email student entries for the Congressional Art Competition.

The new entry process is due to the pandemic. Panetta’s office has asked art teachers to select five entries per school and submit high-resolution photos via email. Art can range from paintings and drawings to photography and mixed media.
A preselected judge will view the art digitally and choose the top three places and five honorable mentions, based on originality, skill, excellence in use of materials and conceptual strength.
Winners will be announced May 6.
The 1st place winner’s artwork will be shipped to Washington, D.C., where it will be on display in the Cannon House Office Building’s Capitol Tunnel for one year, alongside 1st place artwork from congressional districts across the country.
Teachers and students (5 entries allowed per school) should email their high-resolution photo to CA20ArtCompetition@mail.house.gov and include: Student’s name, grade, address, email, phone number, parent name and phone number, name of school and art teacher, title of entry, medium, dimensions, description of entry. If student will email an entry, the student must attach an email from the teacher certifying artwork originality.
The first place winner and a family member will be invited to a ceremony in Washington, D.C., at the end of June. A local reception will take place sometime this spring.
More than 650,000 high school students have participated in the nationwide competition since it began in 1982.
