The game had been tied when Kittleson replaced Michal Chavez on the Cowboys’ 39-yard line with 21 seconds left. Zak Pepperdine had caught a 36 yd pass from Kittleson to put them in position for the winning TD.

Kittleson finished with 3-of-6 passing for 48 yards and the game-winning touchdown. Chavez was 3-of-7 for 31 yards in the game.

Aptos had punted the ball with just 2:02 left in the fourth quarter, but the Mariners forced the Cowboys to give up the ball with a 3-and-out.

The Mariners led 14-7 at halftime with a touchdown run from Pierce for 5 yards and a 35 yard scamper from Connan Houser in the first half. Miles Beaudoin led Aptos in rushing with 56 yards on 14 carries. The Mariners gave the ball to 11 different ball carriers in the game.

Soquel High beat host Aptos 20-10 in the Monterey Bay League Gabilan Division. Alex Stratton led Aptos in scoring.

20th annual Early Bird Invitational at Toro Park in Salinas

Aptos High girls cross country finished with the best overall time and team record of 1 hour, 36 minutes and 43 seconds on Saturday, Sept. 6.

Aptos junior Matti Peoples finished third in her grade with a time of 18:46, while teammate and sophomore Annika Mcbride followed in 19:01 to take second in her division.
