Arguments Due This Week for School District Measure on May Ballot

Persons interested in writing an argument for or against Measure S on the May 7, 2013 all mail ballot election must do so by the deadline this week.

Measure S – Soquel Union Elementary School District’s parcel tax measure argument deadline is 5 p.m. Thursday, February 14.

The question before qualified voters in the Soquel Union Elementary School District’s parcel tax measure in May is:

Measure S – EDUCATION IMPROVEMENT MEASURE. To provide stable funding for New Brighton Middle, Main Street, Opal Cliffs, Santa Cruz Gardens and Soquel Elementary for academic programs in reading, writing, math and science, attracting and retaining quality teachers, smaller class sizes, school libraries/librarians, maintaining art and music programs, shall Soquel Union Elementary School District levy an education tax of $90 per parcel for eight years with citizen oversight, exempting senior citizens, no funds for administrators’ salaries, and all funds staying local?


Arguments for or against the Soquel Union Elementary School District measure must be filed by 5 p.m., Thursday, February 14 with the Santa Cruz County Clerk/Elections Department, 701 Ocean St., Room 210, Santa Cruz, 831-454-2060, FAX: 831-454-2445.

Arguments must not exceed 300 words. In addition, arguments must be accompanied by a signed “Signature Statement” form available from the elections official or online at www.votescount.com. The form is contained in the “Guide to Writing Arguments” on the Santa Cruz County Elections Department’s website.

Only one argument for and one argument against each measure will be printed in each county’s Voter’s Information Pamphlet mailed to all registered voters in the districts in early April. Should more than one argument be filed, the county elections official will choose one to appear in accordance with the law.
