Seventeen-year-old Tyler Hayford’s passion for playing and studying the piano began at age 5. He currently studies with Hans Boepple of Santa Clara University, a Steinway International Artist with a career that spans 40 years. Tyler was one of only six pianists admitted this summer to the Meadowmount School of Music, where he was awarded a scholarship to attend. His performance of Brahms Piano Trio No. 2 received many compliments from prominent teachers in New York.

At the age of 10, Tyler received the Barbara Call Award for “Most Promising Musician,” and has been the winner of multiple 1st place awards from the Santa Cruz County Music Teachers Association in consecutive years. In March 2013, he performed Brahms Piano Quintet Op. 34 at UCSC Recital Hall as a grand prizewinner of the Santa Cruz Baroque Festival Youth Chamber Music Competition and again at a benefit concert to support musicians.

Tyler also has studied pipe organ with Vlada Volkova Moran since 2011 and has performed at benefit concerts for the Santa Cruz Baroque Festival and at the 7th annual Organist’s Kaleidophone in Santa Cruz. He is a frequent guest organist at Messiah Lutheran Church in Santa Cruz.

In addition to his piano and organ accomplishments, Tyler has studied viola with Vladimir Khalikulov and was principal violist of the Santa Cruz County Youth Symphony and guest violist at the California Philharmonic Youth Orchestra until moving on to concentrate on piano more recently.

Tyler, a school junior, said: “There is really nothing I enjoy more than playing and performing music. Playing with other young musicians and producing a beautiful sound together in front of an audience after long hours of practices and rehearsals can only be described as “magical.” I intend to pursue a career in classical music performance; as a solo artist, member of a chamber ensemble, and maybe someday, as a conductor.”

In addition to his enthusiasm for music and playing it with peers, he enjoys playing soccer, running and hanging out with friends, photography and sketching. He can often be found taking meditative walks through the forest or scouting new places to shoot photos.
