Cabrillo College Graduates 1,334 Students

CabrilloGraduates_standing 1,334 Students Times Publishing Group Inc tpgonlinedaily.comCabrillo College honored its 57th graduating class of 1,334 students during a formal commencement ceremony on Friday, May 20th to confer degrees and certificates.

This year Cabrillo awarded 961 A.A. degrees, 539 A.S. degrees, 159 certificates of achievement, and 237 skills certificates. The Cabrillo College Class of 2016 is comprised of graduates ranging in age from 18 to 74 years with a median age of 25. Of the total graduates, 63% are females and 37% are males.

The Cabrillo College Class of 2016 contains 188 students (14 percent) who will graduate with high honors (3.75-3.99 GPA), 213 (16 percent) who will graduate with honors (3.5-3.74 GPA) and 473 (35.5 percent) who will graduate with honorable mentions (3.0-3.49 GPA) for a total of 65.5 percent of the class of 2016 that graduated with honors or honorable mentions.

A record 35 students graduated as part of the Honors Transfer Program, with 15 units of honors coursework, and maintaining a 3.5 or higher GPA. These students plan to transfer to four-year universities including Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Santa Cruz and UC Davis, among others.


With an 65% increase over last year, 256 students graduated with an Associates Degree for Transfer (AA-T/AS-T) and meet the California State University (CSU) minimum eligibility requirements are guaranteed admission to a CSU. Last year, Cabrillo had 165 graduates with AA-T/AS-T degrees.

Cabrillo College Vice President of Student Services Dennis Bailey-Fougnier welcomed participants and guests and Cabrillo College President and Superintendent Dr. Laurel Jones and Cabrillo Faculty Senate President Dr. Robin McFarland gave their congratulatory remarks to the Cabrillo College Class of 2016.

Vice President of Instruction Dr. Kathleen Welch presented the class of 2016, with inspiring stories of graduates in the 2016 class who have overcome adversity in achieving their degrees.

Dr. Ekua Omosupe, English Instructor, Dr. Francisco Iniguez Becerra, Spanish Instructor, Matthew Halter, Biology Instructor, and Gabriela Rodriguez, Math Instructor, read the graduates’ names.
