Cabrillo’s 2015 Graduating Class: 1,168

Cabrillo College honored its 56th graduating class of 1,168 students during a formal commencement ceremony on Friday, May 22 by conferring degrees and certificates. Cabrillo’s 2015 Graduation Ceremony took place Friday, May 22 at Carl Conelly Stadium, Cabrillo College in Aptos.

This year Cabrillo awarded 769 A.A. degrees, 391 A.S. degrees, 127 certificates of achievement, and 210 skills certificates. The Cabrillo College Class of 2015 is comprised of graduates ranging in age from 17 to 74 years with an average age of 29. Of the total graduates, 62% are females and 38% are males.

The Cabrillo College Class of 2015 contains 68 members graduating with a perfect grade point average (GPA) of 4.0. This year 107 students graduated with high honors (3.75-3.99 GPA), 184 graduated with honors (3.5-3.74 GPA) and 487 graduated with honorable mentions (3.0-3.49 GPA).

Fifteen students graduated as part of the Honors Transfer Program, having completed all of the courses required including at least 15 units of honors coursework, while also maintaining a 3.5 or higher GPA. These students have been accepted and plan to transfer in to four-year universities including UCLA, UC Berkeley and UC Santa Cruz, among others.

With an 80 percent increase over last year’s total, this year 165 students graduated with an Associates Degree for Transfer (AA-T/AS-T) Transfer Degree, a special degree offered for the first time two years ago by California Community Colleges. Students who earn an AA-T or AS-T degree and meet the California State University (CSU) minimum eligibility requirements are guaranteed admission to a CSU. Last year, Cabrillo had 92 graduates with AA-T/AS-T degrees.

Following the processional and the National Anthem sung by the Cabrillo Chorale, Cabrillo College Vice President of Student Services Dennis Bailey-Fougnier welcomed participants and guests. Cabrillo College President and Superintendent Dr. Laurel Jones and Cabrillo Faculty Senate President Dr. Michael Mangin gave their congratulatory remarks to the Cabrillo College Class of 2015.

Vice President of Instruction Dr. Kathleen Welch then presented the class of 2015 with inspiring stories of graduates in the 2015 class who have overcome adversity in achieving their degrees.

Dr. Ekua Omosupe, English Instructor, Dr. Rachel Mayo, Dean of Education Centers, Dr. Francisco Iniguez Becerra, Spanish Instructor, and Sesario Escoto, Former Dean of Student Services, read the graduates’ names.

A reception for graduates and guests was held in the pavilion on the stadium field, immediately following the ceremony.
