Capitola City Council to Discuss Tax Measure Thursday

Anticipating reserves to dwindle by $880,000 in 2021 due to the COVID-19 shutdown, the Capitola City Council will hear from pollster Gene Bregman at 7 p.m. Thursday June 11 on a survey to see whether voters would support a tax measure in November.

The survey asked about establishing utility use tax, increasing the sales tax from 9 percent to 9.25 percent, and establishing a permanent tax for ocean protection. Bregman will present the polling results at the meeting.

Due to COVID-19, public comment will be taken remotely. Comments should be no more than 450 words.

The deadline to place measures on the ballot is Aug. 7. There are only two regular council meetings prior to that date; June 25 and July 23.

The council must provide direction and adopt the appropriate resolutions before Aug. 7 to place a measure on the Nov. 3 ballot.
