Explore California’s Finest Wharf
Friday, September 23, 2016 • 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Foot of the Wharf at Cowell Seawall

Proclaimed as “California’s finest Wharf” the Santa Cruz City Council opened the Municipal Wharf on December 5, 1914 to better serve the prolific freighter traffic moving lumber, limestone and blasting powder out of the Santa Cruz Mountains and to secure the City’s future as one of the State’s most important shipping harbors. Fate would determine, however, that the City’s Wharf and the City’s fortunes, now forever bound together, would see a decidedly different future than the maritime commercial hub so many imagined inevitable on that opening day.

Time, tide, necessity and technology have all played a role in the still evolving history of the Santa Cruz Wharf. Please join us for a look at the past, present and the exciting future awaiting our beloved Municipal Wharf, now recognized as a world class architectural treasure and the longest timber pile wharf in U.S. ocean waters.
