Donations sought for COVID-19 Response Fund
The Santa Cruz County Community Foundation has opened a charitable fund to help meet the developing challenges linked with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), in particular focusing on supporting low-income residents who face financial hardships caused by the public health crisis.
Business shutdowns, school closures, and event cancellations are inflicting financial harm on employees already living paycheck-to-paycheck. Some will find themselves temporarily unemployed and unable to pay rent.
“In a region of skyrocketing housing prices, many residents were already struggling financially,” said Community Foundation CEO Susan True. “Factor in COVID-19, and these individuals could face even more economic hardships that could threaten their livelihoods and prevent them from meeting their most basic human needs.”
She added,”The impact has been felt first and most intensely by our neighbors who were already struggling ━ seniors, low wage workers and working families. Frail seniors who used to benefit from daily group care are now isolated and at home. We must ensure that they have continued care and nutrition. Workers who have never used public benefits before may now be eligible for unemployment and other services and we must help them access the benefits that can keep them housed, fed and stable. The impacts have already been felt sharply and we know this will only heighten as more businesses and nonprofits shutter.”
