images-1Santa Cruz, CA – On October 22nd the Downtown Santa Cruz Farmers’ Markets will be celebrating Farmer Appreciation Week – inspired by the country-wide movement “National Food Day”. From 2:30 – 4:30pm we will be running a fun photo booth in partnership with Charlie Hong Kong and the Museum of Art and History. Customers and farmers, the young and old alike will have a chance to get their photo taken while holding a statement of dedication to local food. Your sign might say “I heart lemon cucumbers”. Mine will read “carrot is my middle name”. Whether you use one of our ready-made signs or craft your own, hold it up while getting your mug shot taken inside a gigantic frame. Pose with friends, family, your sweetie, a real live farmer. Use props ranging from a head of cauliflower to a shovel. Soon after, view these sometimes goofy, other times compelling photos and share them with friends through an online exhibition.

At 4:30pm Mayor Lynn Robinson will make a proclamation expressing the central role that our local markets hold in sustainable, responsible food systems and naming October 16th-22nd, 2014 Farmer Appreciation Week. Purchasing your food through the area’s markets ensures that you are getting the freshest, healthiest and tastiest foods while supporting local jobs, increasing local spending and promoting the region’s strong farming tradition. Let’s all get down with this fun opportunity to make it known just how much we as a community, in private and in public, appreciate our regional farms.
