A number of local residents have been recently targeted by phone, from callers claiming to be associated with the Aptos/La Selva Fire District (or in some cases just “your local fire departments”), collecting for a supposed burn foundation charity. They push the callers to make payments over the phone, via credit card, in order to collect their personal information. The District would like to make as much of the public as possible aware of this scam, for our District does NOT solicit donations by phone, and the local Sheriff has been notified of this illegal activity. The calls are particularly convincing as they appear to be coming from the 831 area code, but these come from a series of disposable cell phones that disconnect shortly after calling the victims.
If you receive a call from one of these individuals, please contact local law enforcement, and do NOT, under any circumstances, give them credit card or bank information.
