Firearms Arrest in Santa Cruz

Donald JacksonOn March 21, 2013, Santa Cruz Police Officers arrested Mr. Jackson for being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. Officers contacted Mr. Jackson after a 9-1-1 call was received by our dispatch center. During the course of the contact, officers wrestled the gun away from Mr. Jackson as he grabbed for it. The gun was in a holster tucked inside his waistband.

Officers were called to Mr. Jackson’s apartment at approximately 3:40 AM because of a 9-1-1 hang up call to our dispatch center. Mr. Jackson was contacted at his front door by the officers. In the course of the contact, Mr. Jackson pulled up his shirt and grabbed for a revolver tucked inside the waistband of his pants. Officers were able to wrestle the handgun away from Mr. Jackson and tackle him to the ground. Mr. Jackson was taken into custody and the handgun retrieved.

Mr. Jackson told the officers that he purchased the handgun at a gun show held at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds on Sunday March 17, 2013. The handgun is a single action Colt .45 caliber revolver. In spite of the age of the handgun, it was fully functional.

Mr. Jackson had previously been detained by Santa Cruz Police Department in February of 2013. In that instance, Mr. Jackson was 8103. Mr. Jackson was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail for a violation of 8103(i) Welfare and Institutions.


Because of the age of the firearm, records were not immediately available. Investigators are still researching the history of the firearm and how Mr. Jackson came to possess it.  

transported to Dominican Hospital Behavioral Health Unit after officers were called to his apartment by neighbors who reported Mr. Jackson yelling and pounding on walls.

Mr. Jackson is not legally eligible to purchase, own or possess firearms due to previous detentions, pursuant to Welfare and Institutions Code Section
