Highway 1 Speed Race Ends in DUI Arrests

A 17-year-old girl from Scotts Valley driving a car with several teen-age passengers and a 22-year-old were arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) after a speed race on Highway 1 at midnight Wednesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP officers patrolling Highway 1 saw two cars racing between Santa Cruz and Capitola going more than 100 miles per hour and stopped both cars on Bay Avenue in Capitola.

After seeing signs of impaired driving, officers conducted a DUI investigation which resulted in both drivers being arrested for DUI. Both cars were towed away.

The 17-year-old was cited; the name of a juvenile is not released. Juan Serna Cabrales, 22, of Santa Cruz, who was driving the other car on a suspended license, was booked into Santa Cruz County jail.

“This is a sobering reminder and that reckless & distracted driving continues to be a leading cause of death for teens in America,” said CHP Office Sam Courtney, who posted a photo from the scene on the CHP Santa Cruz Facebook page.
