Ice Cream Cooperation

Santa Cruz Ice Cream Makers, Marianne’s & Polar Bear, Reflect Community Spirit

Santa Cruz, CA – Santa Cruz has long supported two beloved ice cream makers in mariannesPolar Bear and Marianne’s. And in true Santa Cruz style, the companies have long supported each other even as they have competed for the taste-buds of generations of locals. When a refrigerated truck breaks down, a freezer fails, or an ingredient runs a bit short, the two creameries have always been quick to lend a hand.

Marianne’s and Polar Bear are taking their cooperation a step further by merging back office and delivery efforts. The two makers will keep their separate production facilities, staff, and unique ice cream styles, as well as their Santa Cruz emphasis on signature handmade recipes, quality and natural ingredients.

“We share customers and we both manage deliveries, orders and paperwork, so this will allow us to spend more time on the fun part, working with customers, creating flavors, hosting and catering ice cream parties. I’m really happy about it,” said Mary Young, owner of Polar Bear Ice Cream.

“I’m stoked,” says Charlie Wilcox who owns Marianne’s with Kelly Dillon. “Between Polar Bear and Marianne’s you are looking at over a century of great ice cream making. It’s great fun to carry on that tradition with Mary.” Dillon adds, “How can you go wrong with a Dancing Cow and a Surfing Polar Bear on your team? Santa Cruz ice cream is the best!”

Marianne’s has been in operation since 1947. Polar Bear Ice Cream was founded in 1975; both companies serve stores and restaurants throughout the Bay area.
