In the Heights is a Must See!

Critics agree, Cabrillo Stage’s production of “In the Heights” is a must see! Come be a part of the enthusiastic audience as they spontaneously jump to their feet in praise of the music, the dance and the spirited, heartfelt performances of the residents of the warm, welcoming neighborhood of Washington Heights.

Director Estrella Esparza-Johnson was clear in her vision of the show as evidenced by her casting choices and her collaborations with the creative team. To begin with design: she wanted a luminous quality to the set. Scenic Designer Scott Boynton thought an illustration aspect inspired by urban street art — specifically that of artist Graffmatt — would create the energy Estrella was after. With this in mind, Scott created a scenic design that showcases the iconic architecture of New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood painted with spray-can style splatters, drips, and smudged lines.

Richard Fong’s color-saturated lighting design aimed to support the set’s luminosity while also matching the rhythmic elements of the score. Richard used lighting to highlight “liminal spaces” throughout the play – moments when one character shares insights about their journey while the action around them stays alive. One of the characters, Usnavi, refers to himself as a “streetlight” so his liminal space reflects that by illuminating him as if he was standing in a pool of light.

A team of prop artisans, led by Natalie Silva, meticulously recreated items to fill the shelves of the bodega, the piragua cart, beauty salon and the Rosario’s business. These design aspects combine to create a world on stage that vibrates with the intensity and feel of the visual elements of Hiphop.

When it comes to casting, the talented cast hits every mark with their compelling and delightful portrayals. Veteran actor Miguel Reyna, who authentically plays businessman and doting father Kevin Rosario, commented that the cast is actually as close-knit, loving and caring as the community they portray. Karriyma Pekary, a captivating Vanessa, is grateful to be a part of such a “phenomenally gifted cast who has grown to feel like family. Mi gente!”

As an Afro-Latina raised on the East Coast, Karriyma had a difficult upbringing not unlike the character she portrays. She shares, “Tapping into my past experiences in order to connect with Vanessa has been a tender yet healing process. Being able to show her depth and complexity has been a real challenge and a thrill for me as an actor. I truly feel honored to have this opportunity to bring Vanessa’s story to life.”

Melissa Martinez, with her powerful voice and impeccable comedic timing, plays Daniela, the salon owner who is tough on the outside but has a heart of gold. She describes her character as “hardworking but full of joy and playfulness when it comes to life and all its wonders. She’s funny, caring and full of hope for the future.” Melissa further explains that the audience “can expect to be immersed in a story and a culture that isn’t often displayed as articulately and beautifully as this show does. I want audiences to walk away with the story and voices of the barrio, but more importantly the impact of a community who is made up of resilience, pride, love and hope.”

Andrea Hart chose “In the Heights” for her second musical as Cabrillo Stage Artistic Director. She put the creative team together which included RJ Wayne who gave his expertise as Hiphop specialist; costume designer Maria Crush; Chris “Boogy” Marcos, who created the unique choreography that fills the stage and brings life to every scene; and musical director Michael J. McGushin who conducts the incredible, live, onstage band.

There are a few remaining performances and then this wonderful neighborhood of Washington Heights, with its nuanced and loveable Latino characters will be gone. Don’t miss this unforgettable production of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “In the Heights”.
