Unknown-1Weekends — Elkhorn Slough Ecological Reserve. Docent-led walks are scheduled every Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Binoculars and bird books are available for the public to borrow at no cost. CDFW Climate College, CDFW is offering the second year of its Climate College in 2014. This course focuses on how climate change affects the state’s marine resources and seeks to enhance participants’ understanding of marine-related climate change science, potential impacts to species and habitats and the implications for marine region management and planning. The course consists of a seven-part lecture series and people can participate in person or via WebEx. 1 — First Day of California Grunion Season. Grunion are the object of a unique recreational fishery. These fish are famous for their remarkable spawning behavior, which evokes a disbelieving response from people seeing or hearing about it for the first time. 2 — Big Game Drawing Deadline. Applications for elk, antelope, bighorn sheep, premium deer tags and fundraising drawing tags must be submitted and the transaction must be completed before midnight on June 2. 7 — Estuary Awareness Day, Back Bay Science Center, 600 Shellmaker Road, Newport Beach (92660), 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. No pre-registration is required for the free event in which visitors can learn about the ecological value of estuaries through hands-on activities. There will be estuarine-themed activities and interactive display booths. Pontoon tours will be available via registration at the event but there is limited space. 8 — Amargosa Vole Lecture, presented by Dr. Janet Foley and Dr. Robert Klinger, 1 to 3 p.m. in the Natural Resources Building Auditorium, 1416 Ninth St., Sacramento (95814). The lecture is part of the Conservation Lecture Series which introduces participants to California’s diverse wildlife. The Amargosa vole is an endangered species with the possibility of extinction without immediate and ongoing recovery actions. The presenters will discuss population dynamics, habitat selection, occupancy patterns and relationship of water to the distribution of the vole’s habitat. The event will also be webcast live. 10 — San Diego Area Contingency Plan (ACP) Sensitive Site Strategy Evaluation Program (SSSEP) Event9 a.m., Loma Alta Creek at 1506 South Pacific Street, Oceanside (92054). The program is a joint effort sponsored by CDFW’s Office of Spill Prevention and Response and the United States Coast Guard Sector San Diego. 19 — Panel Presentation on Summer Fishing on the American River, 7 p.m., Nimbus Hatchery Visitor Center, 2001 Nimbus Road, Rancho Cordova (95670). A panel will discuss which fish species are present in the American River during the summer months, and tips on the best locations, gear and methods for catching them. The event is free. 28 — Catch Trout Fest 2014 at Hot Creek Hatchery, 121 Hot Creek Hatchery Road, Mammoth Lakes (93546), 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Trout Fest is a free event that introduces people of all ages to the basics of trout fishing. Fishing is for youths 15 years of age and younger. CDFW staff and volunteers will teach participants how to tie basic fishing knots, rig a pole, cast, handle trout and how to clean and cook trout.
