(Beginning at 9:00am at 220 Mt. Hermon Road, Scotts Valley—in the Kings Village Shopping Center next to Cali-Style)
SCOTTS VALLEY – The Regional Artisans Association (aka Scotts Valley Artisans) is coordinating its second Mural-in-a-Day community event on Saturday, May 18, 2013, beginnin
g at 9:00am. Up to 50 artists and community volunteers will work together to paint this spring’s winning mural design on the side of the Nob Hill building, next to Cali-Style. The winning design for the mural was submitted by UC Santa Cruz art major Aidan McCarthy, who will be the “Master Muralist” for this event.
The theme of the mural is “Remembering Kings Market, Circa 1968.” In 1965, long-time Santa Cruz County residents George and Emily Ow purchased the 33 acre Dettling Dairy Farm (now known as the Kings Village Shopping Center). In 1968, the Ows opened Kings Market (where Nob Hill currently sits), one of the first “supermarkets” in Santa Cruz County, and the first business opened in the shopping center. The Ows and their family owned and operated the market for many years. The mural is an homage to the original Kings Market and to the Ow Family, who have called Santa Cruz County home since the 1930’s and are well-known for their decades of business and philanthropic contributions to our community.
Inspired by other mural projects throughout small-town California, the Mural-in-a-Day Project was launched in April of 2012 as part of a broader effort to help make Santa Cruz County a nationally recognized art destination center. A winning mural design based on a particular theme is chosen by a jury of local artists and community leaders, and that winning designer becomes the “Master Muralist, who helps oversee and manage the mural process.” Our August 2012 Mural-in-a-Day event resulted in a stunning 100’ by 17’ mural on the side of the Cinelux Theater in Scotts Valley.
The goal of the Mural-in-a-Day Project is to highlight the creativity and talent that exists in our county in a very public arena; to involve our “non-artist” community members in helping to create the public art that they will then see and enjoy every day; and to help make public art a centerpiece of our downtown business districts while highlighting some of the rich history and motifs of our County’s unique communities.
Scotts Valley businesses & organizations generously sponsoring this mural event include: Bruno’s BBQ Restaurant, the Scotts Valley Arts Commission, Modern Woodman Fraternal Financial, Ideal Hair, Cali-Style, Erik’s DeliCafe, Hinde Chiropractic, Choi’s Tae Kwon Do, Winchester Auto, Ace/Scarborough Hardware, Bean Creek Studio, Fuse Clothing Consignment and the Cinelux Theater.
