Michael Tierra specifically commissioned Alex Shapiro because of a shared empathetic connection and to give expression of his dual life calling as a pianist, composer, choral director and herbalist, acupuncturist, healer, teacher.” He is the author of nine books including the best selling ”Way of Herbs.” One of the pioneers of the worldwide herbal movement with 45 years as an herbalist and a 38-year clinical practice in Santa Cruz (since 1978)

Arcana: An introspective 20-minute work consisting of 8 movements. According to the composer “explores the painfully fragile and often perilous relationship between humans and the secrets of earth’s abundant plant life – from the perspective of the plants themselves, with healing herbs as protagonists of a story that begins with a dire warning, and ends with the faith that wisdom and grace shall ultimately triumph.”
