Railroad Bridge Rehabilitation Work Approved

The Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) selected low bidder Stacy and Whitbeck, Inc. to rehabilitate four bridges on the Santa Cruz Branch Rail Line.  Work will include high priority bridges that require more immediate attention, including the La Selva Bridge.  Work on the bridges will start in the fall of this year. The RTC’s construction management consultant, Hatch Mott MacDonald, provided analysis of the work needed on the bridges and reviewed the bid to ensure that the firm selected is both qualified and responsible.

Based on the inspections of the structures engineering firm (JL Patterson & Associates) hired by the RTC, within the Priority 1 bridges there are bridges that require attention more immediately. Those bridges are as follows:

Bridges Needing More Immediate Attention: MP 4.87 (Watsonville Sought) $129,500 • MP 9.09 (La Selva Beach) $3,654,001 • MP 11.16 (Rio Del Mar) $284,500 • MP 23.54 $121,000 = TOTAL $4,189,001

Over $5 million in State Transportation Improvement Program funds for the bridge rehabilitation work was approved by the California Transportation Commission in December 2012 as a condition of acquisition of the 32-mile rail line.
