Santa Cruz Police officers captured a burglar in the 200 block of Chace Street, a normally quiet Westside Neighborhood. We are crediting an alert neighbor who called in the suspicious activity and gave responding officers a great description of the suspect.
The alert neighbor reported seeing the suspect, 22 year-old Ryan Sargenti, attempting to enter the home through a window. Mr. Sargenti removed the screen and appeared to be trying to wipe his fingerprints from the window glass.
The neighbor confronted Mr. Sargenti and he (Sargenti) fled from the area. Responding officers established a perimeter and conducted an intensive search. Mr. Sargenti was found in the neighborhood and identified as the suspect. Officers learned that while fleeing, Mr. Sargenti went to his awaiting car and changed his clothes. Nonetheless, alert officers located and identified Mr. Sargenti.
His car is described as a green 2000 Saab Q-23 License Plate #5AKR226.
Mr. Sargenti has a significant history of police contact and was on probation at the time of this arrest.
This case underscores the collaborative efforts between the Santa Cruz Police Department and Community. Thanks to an alert neighbor who called to report this activity, a burglar is in jail and potential victims were saved. We are grateful that this concerned neighbor was both alert to the happenings in the neighborhood and called 9-1-1 to report the suspicious activity.
