Run For Rio 5k & Fun Run Debuts

Presented by Rio Del Mar Parent Alliance; Fun Run to Honor Lily Jacob

The Rio del Mar Parent Alliance, a non-profit organization of volunteer parents and community members supporting Rio del Mar Elementary, announced today its first annual Run for Rio 5K & Fun Run, Saturday, October 13 at Seascape Park, Aptos. The run is a fun community event open to all — promoting good health while providing needed funds to Rio del Mar Elementary.

Proceeds from the 5K run will directly benefit Rio del Mar students by funding many vital programs including computer technology, reading/math/language enrichment, art programs, and providing curriculum materials. The 9:30 a.m. Fun Run portion of the event is free and will be held in honor of 11 year old Lily Jacob, a Rio Del Mar student who tragically passed away this summer and who would have been a 6th grader this year. Lily died in less than 24 hours after her entire family came down with food poisoning while vacationing in Costa Rica. The Rio Fun Run is proud to honor her memory.

The race will start at Seascape Park and finish at Seascape Village. Registration starts at 7:00 am and the 5K begins at 8:00 am, rain or shine. The registration fee is $30 for all 5K participants; family rates for five people are $90. Race participants and supporters are invited to Seascape Village Fitness and Physical Therapy for pre-run warms ups and the post-run award ceremony, raffle and family activities. All fitness levels are welcome. Run for Rio is designed for the whole family to enjoy.

“The mission of the Rio Del Mar Parent Alliance is to enrich the educational experience of our students through community events as well as raising funds for critical programs while also promoting health and well being for our school community.” said Deborah Dorney, principal of Rio del Mar Elementary. “This fundraising event raises needed funds to continue enhance our students and provide support to our teachers and curriculum.”

Run For Rio 5k & Fun Run at Seascape Park, Saturday, October 13. The 5k starts at 8:00 am and the free Fun Run will start at the finish of the 5K, approximately 9:30 am.

Starting at Seascape Park, the course will wind throughout the surrounding neighborhoods for the 5k. The fun run will take place around the park. Seascape Village Fitness and Physical Therapy is hosting both pre & post run gatherings including healthy snacks and beverages and guided warm-up and cool-down periods. Seascape Foods is providing a post fuel station. T-shirt pick up, goodie bags, race results and prizes will be held at Seascape Village, approximately 10:30 am.
