Russo’s Collision Repair

A Family Affair

By Katie Gallegos

Russos-sign Russo Times Publishing Group Inc tpgonlinedaily.comThe story of Fernando and Katie Gallegos, the owners of Russo’s Collision Repair in Watsonville, is testament to hard work, integrity and high standards leading to only one thing … survival and success.

It’s been a busy 20-year marriage for Peruvian born surfer Fernando and his wife, Katie. Raising and supporting three children was a full time job already but that didn’t stop the couple in 2004 from taking the ultimate of financial risks of buying a business in the collision repair industry.

“We put it all on the line to buy Russo’s Body Shop but we had been preparing for years to be ready” laughs Fernando. There is not one repair department that he hasn’t worked in personally. Starting at the bottom as a prepper in the late 80’s and moving into paint, then pursuing the education needed on his own time to become a journey level repair technician, and finally making the hardest move, into the office to become an estimator. But truthfully, nothing can prepare you for the challenges that owning your own company can throw at you though.

The first two years were the hardest … the businesses’ direct repair contracts with AAA and State Farm were cancelled immediately under new ownership, half of the crew decided to leave and start their own shop three buildings down the street and customers loyal to the previous owner were not too happy with change. But luck and hard work were on the couple’s side. Fernando updated and modernized the software and equipment needed to run a progressive shop and Katie advertised, marketed, networked and wooed the community and insurance companies alike and together they learned how to keep their business afloat.

The economy crashing in 2007 had less effect on them than on many of the bigger shops. Russo’s by that time was already a fast, lean and efficient young business dedicated to high repair standards and excellent customer service.

“Our customers love us … and it’s mutual,” admits Fernando. “We really pride ourselves on our customer service. Accidents are stressful and the insurance claims can be challenging. We walk them through the process, take the time to explain the repairs and keep them informed and updated every step of the way.”

You can also expect the use of OEM parts installed to manufacturer’s specifications as well as peace of mind that the planet is also getting a break with their use of PPG Waterborne Paint and conscientious environmental practices. All that, and a Lifetime Guarantee on every repair they do.

So, nine years later, Katie and Fernando have raised the bar for collision repair standards in the area. Russo’s Collision Repair boasts a lot of “only” for the Pajaro Valley. The only I-CAR Gold Class Repair Facility, the only Certified Genuine Repair Providers for Honda, Chrysler and GM. The only shop with an on-site car rental partnered with Hertz and pretty sure the only shop who gives their customers bouquet of fresh flowers at pick up time just to say “thank you” when there done!

The best part of a car accident (if that’s possible) is knowing that Fernando, Katie and the talented crew Russo’s Collision Repair will be there for you and your car when you need them.
