Santa Cruz County Breakers to Host 13th Annual Breakers Cup Soccer Tournament

More than 4,500 youth soccer players expected to participate;

tournament brings in $250K revenue to local tourism economy.

SANTA CRUZ — The Santa Cruz County Breakers, the county’s nationally recognized soccer club providing boys and girls with year-round professional soccer training, announced today that its 2014 Breakers Cup will draw more than 4,500 youth soccer players, their coaches and families, to Santa Cruz County for weekend tournaments July 26-27 and Aug. 1-2. The Breakers Cup, now in its 13th year, brings boys and girls club soccer teams from across Northern California and from as far away as Hawaii and Washington State to play against one another. Various levels of competition, from U9 to U18 teams, will participate in the tournament, which will be headquartered at Cabrillo College for the first time in 2014. Approximately 160 teams are expected to compete each weekend. The tournament is open to USYSA, US Club Soccer, CYSA, and FIFA-affiliated Boys teams will play July 26-27, while girls will take the field Aug. 2-3. Game locations are spread across 17 fields in Santa Cruz, Soquel and Aptos, including Cabrillo College, UC Santa Cruz, Anna Jean Cummings Park, Branciforte Middle School and Good Shepherd School. Breakers Cup T-shirts designed by local skate and surf artist Jimbo Phillips will be sold for $15 at tournament locations. As part of a partnership with UC Santa Cruz, this year’s Breakers Cup will offer a pilot program where players, coaches and their families can stay in the university dorms. This new lodging options also gives youth players exposure to a college campus during their Breakers Cup experience. The Breakers Cup also is an economic win for the county, drawing thousands of athletes and spectators to Santa Cruz County each summer.
