Campaign Kick-off Thursday, Feb. 12 from 6-8 p.m. Kaiser Permanente Arena
The Monument would include over 5,800 acres of land north of Santa Cruz. Originally protected from expansive development by a coalition of non-profits that pooled their resources to purchase the land, it was deeded to the BLM in 2014. Many individuals were involved in the process of creating a management plan for the property at the time.
The VWC board understands the issues involved in making sure that the land is protected, not just opened for public use. The coalition will be deeply involved in the planning process if these amazing acres are declared a Monument by executive order. They encourage your involvement as well. Planning for a National Monument includes public participation.
The property is already protected from mineral extraction and timber harvests. We can help other uses, from hiking to horseback riding to mountain biking, are limited, regulated and well controlled/patrolled, to ensure the protection of these wild areas, and the beauty of these fragile lands and waterways.
