Santa Cruz SPCA Appoints New Director

“We are excited that Robert has agreed to lead the Santa Cruz SPCA team,” said Richard Hill, president, SPCA board of directors. “With his diverse nonprofit background, including an exceptional tenure at Humane Society Silicon Valley, Robert will bring excellent skills and new energy to the SPCA, along with fresh ideas, enhanced by his extensive experience in fundraising, community outreach, and building collaborative partnerships.”

Robert Armbrust has a broad-based, 20-year nonprofit background, with experience in a diverse range of organizational missions, including animal welfare, youth development, education, and voluntary health. Most recently, he was director of development and marketing for Boys & Girls Clubs of North San Mateo County, where he was involved in operations, strategic development, and marketing for six sites, serving more than 2,500 children and youth per year.

Previously, Armbrust served as director of leadership giving at Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV). During his nearly seven-year tenure with the shelter, he achieved significant fundraising goals and played a leadership role in creating and executing numerous major development and community outreach initiatives.

Prior to HSSV, he held fundraising and management roles with Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International, Teen Lifeline, and the Children’s Cancer Center at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, all based in Phoenix, Arizona. Armbrust has a B.A. from St. Norbert College in Wisconsin. He will reside in Santa Cruz.


The Santa Cruz SPCA is a private, nonprofit organization, which receives no federal, state, or local government funding, and relies solely on generous donations from the public. Established in 1938, the Santa Cruz SPCA is focused on ensuring the best possible quality of life for animals, and promoting respect and reverence for all.

The main shelter is located at 2685 Chanticleer Avenue in Santa Cruz.   Hours are Tuesday though Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday/Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The SPCA Adoption Center and Gift Shop, located in the Capitola Mall (near Target), is open Fridays from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday/Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
