Save Our Shores Wants YOU to Volunteer for Clean Beaches on July 4th and 5th

Save Our Shores invites all who care about our beaches to put their gloves on and help out on July 4th and 5th with our annual Pollution Prevention is Patriotic event on July 4th and the Annual Star Spangled Beach Cleanup on July 5th. The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and its inhabitants need our help to prevent trash on the beach from entering the water. Trash in the bay harms marine life, creates an eyesore, and can pose problems on the shore for locals and visitors alike. Save Our Shores facilitates beach and inland cleanups all year round and needs extra hands for one of the busiest beach days of the summer – please join us!

Thursday, July 4th, is Pollution Prevention Day. We need volunteers to do outreach giving out bags, spreading the pollution prevention message, and reminding beachgoers to take care of their trash and recyclables after their festive beach day. Our outreach efforts will take place at Cowell and Main Beach, Twin Lakes State Beach, Seabright State Beach, Seacliff/Rio Del Mar Beaches, and Capitola City Beach from 12pm to 4 pm.

Friday, July 5th, is the Star Spangled Beach Cleanup, the second largest beach cleanup of the year. We call for volunteers to be at our beach sites from 8am-10 am for a public cleanup with our sites being Cowell and Main Beach, Twin Lakes State Beach, Seabright State Beach, Seacliff/Rio Del Mar Beaches, Capitola City Beach, Moran Lake Beach, Panther/Yellowbank Beach, and our West Cliff Drive street cleanup. Volunteers are also invited to visit and clean Davenport Main Beach for our Star Spangled XStream Cleanup on the same day, from 8am to 11 am.

“The outreach on the 4th and cleanup on the 5th are two of the most important events of the year for the Save Our Shores community. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the holiday and our Sanctuary than by ensuring that we keep our beaches clean for locals and visitors alike.” Rachel Kippen, Save Our Shores Program Manager.
