Save Our Shores Presents Free Lecture By Susan Freinkel

Community invited to hear author of “Plastic: A Toxic Love Story” speak on Oct. 8

Santa Cruz, CA – Save Our Shores (SOS), the leader in ocean awareness, advocacy and action on the Central Coast, invites the community to attend a free lecture by science writer Susan Freinkel, author of “Plastic: A Toxic Love Story,” at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at The Sanctuary Exploration Center.

In the book, Freinkel treks through history, science and the global economy to assess the real impact of plastic in our lives. She tells her story through eight familiar plastic objects, which illuminate a different facet of our synthetic world, and together give us a new way of thinking about a substance that has become the defining medium—and metaphor—of our age. Her conclusion? We cannot stay on our plastic-paved path. The book points the way toward a new creative partnership with the material we love to hate but cannot seem to live without.

Freinkel’s work has appeared in a variety of national publications, including Discover, Reader’s Digest, Smithsonian, The New York Times, OnEarth, Health and Real Simple.

“When we analyze the impact of plastic in our environment, we tend to be oversaturated with photos of entangled animals and trashed beaches,” said Rachel Kippen, SOS program manager. “Susan encourages us to look at plastic from every perspective and foster critical thinking toward solutions beyond beach cleanups. I encourage anyone who has ever thought twice about plastic to come hear about it from the woman who wrote the golden textbook.”

Guests will enjoy appetizers and beer beginning at 5:30 p.m. Freinkel will start her hour-long lecture at 6:30 p.m., followed by questions and an opportunity for discussion and book signing.

SAVE THE DATE:
