Scotts Valley Middle School’s drama program will present Footloose: Youth Edition in May, marking the group’s first performance at The Landing Scotts Valley Performing Arts Center and a major milestone for student performers.
The production will bring the middle school cast and crew onto a professional stage for the first time, giving students access to advanced lighting and sound systems typically used for larger productions. Director and drama teacher Alexie Neall said the move adds a new level of excitement and realism for everyone involved.
The cast is made up largely of eighth-grade students, making the show a meaningful final production for many before they move on to Scotts Valley High School.
Caleb Neves leads the cast as Ren McCormack, a teenager who moves from Chicago to a small town where dancing is banned. Neves recently appeared in a production of The Sound of Music, and Neall said he brings strong energy and enthusiasm to the role.
Milo Boynton plays Shaw Moore, the town’s preacher who enforces the ban on dancing. The role presents a unique challenge for Boynton, who enjoys dance performance and previously appeared in a production of Newsies.
Raaga Chandiramni takes on the role of Rusty, a lively supporter of music and dance, following a recent performance as Elsa in a school production of Frozen Jr. Bennet Coburn plays Willard, Ren’s loyal friend who struggles with dancing, marking his first major role in the program.
Eva Orlando appears as Urleen, one of Ariel’s close friends, while Lila Rizzi plays Ariel Moore, Ren’s love interest and the preacher’s daughter. Rizzi is the only seventh grader in a principal role.
The production is supported by high school senior Jaycee Barber, who returns as choreographer. Barber is balancing multiple commitments, including school, college planning and performances in other productions, while helping shape the show’s dance elements.
Assistant choreographers Brynn Rizzi and Kaedance McCollum are also contributing to the production, working closely with Barber to refine choreography and support the cast.
Based on the hit film, Footloose tells the story of a teenager challenging strict rules in a small town that has banned dancing. As the story unfolds, the community is forced to confront grief, change and the importance of listening to young voices. The show is known for its energetic music and themes of resilience and self-expression.
Neall said the combination of a well-known story and a new performance space makes this production especially meaningful for students and audiences alike.
Scotts Valley Middle School Drama is inviting community members to attend the performances and support local student artists as they take the stage in a professional setting.
Performances are scheduled for May 15 at 7 p.m., and May 16 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at The Landing. The May 16 afternoon show will feature understudies.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. They will be available at the door and online.
