Joe Ortiz

Joe Ortiz’s one-act, one-woman play “Smoke Cabaret,” starring Lori Rivera, will be performed as part of Santa Cruz Shakespeare’s Community Revels.

The performance will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the Audrey Stanley Grove in DeLaveaga Park.

The show follows a woman’s love life through jazz-style songs and cabaret storytelling. Songs such as “Oysters Any Time of the Day” and “We Took It Off the Menu” use food to explore love, desire and emotional satisfaction.

Rivera, who also starred in Ortiz’s “Bread! — The Musical,” has performed “Smoke Cabaret” since it began. The production grew out of dinner-theater shows presented at Michael’s on Main in Soquel in 2001.

“Smoke Cabaret” has been staged more than 40 times at venues including the Kuumbwa Jazz Center, Monterey Peninsula Country Club, City Lights Theater in San Jose, Shelton Theater in San Francisco and Café Vivaldi in New York City.

Its latest production was presented to a sold-out audience in April at MK Contemporary Art in downtown Santa Cruz.
