Soquel District Names Heather Herbst Principal of Main Street Elementary

The Soquel Union Elementary School District has appointed Heather Herbst as the new principal of Main Street Elementary School.

Herbst, who has more than 27 years of public education experience, officially began her position July 1 following approval by the district’s Board of Trustees.

She most recently served as principal of Rose Avenue Elementary School in Modesto City Schools, where she spent the past nine years leading the campus with a focus on student achievement, instructional leadership, staff development and fostering positive school communities.

Before becoming a principal, Herbst served as a vice principal, instructional coach, Title I coordinator and classroom teacher, giving her experience in multiple aspects of elementary education.

Superintendent Scott Turnbull said Herbst’s background and leadership approach made her a strong fit for the district.

“Heather brings a wealth of leadership experience, a clear commitment to student success, and a passion for building strong partnerships with families, staff and the broader community,” Turnbull said in a statement. “We are confident she will be an exceptional leader for Main Street Elementary.”

District officials said Herbst stood out during the selection process for her student-centered leadership, collaborative approach and commitment to building strong relationships with students, staff and families. They said her emphasis on creating a positive and inclusive school culture aligns with the values of Main Street Elementary and the district.

The district said it is working with Herbst to support her transition from Modesto to Santa Cruz County and provide opportunities to connect with school staff and families before the start of the 2026-27 school year.

Herbst is expected to welcome students to campus when classes begin in early August.
