SOS Final Clean Up Cowells Event of 2014

Save Our Shores Year-end celebration to feature beach cleanup, live music, raffle and more

Santa Cruz, CA – Save Our Shores (SOS), the leader in ocean awareness, advocacy and action on the Central Coast, invites the community to attend the final Clean Up Cowells event of 2014 on Sunday, Dec. 28 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Cowell Beach.

Clean Up CowellsIn addition to cleaning the beach, participants will enjoy live music, coffee, local pastries, and a raffle featuring prizes donated by local businesses. For every $5 donation made to the Clean Up Cowells program, participants will receive one raffle ticket.

Clean Up Cowells was formed in May of 2014 by one of Save Our Shores’ Sanctuary Stewards, Haley Mander. A Santa Cruz local and Dream Inn employee, Mander was disheartened by the large amount of waste left behind by beachgoers. And so, she decided to do something about it.

Every Sunday from 9-11 a.m., Mander and fellow community members meet at Cowell Beach to prevent waste from entering the Monterey Bay. Since the first Clean Up Cowells event on May 4, Mander and volunteers have removed 1,405 pounds of waste from the beach.

“Looking back, I never thought we would have collected this much trash or had such strong support by the community!” said Mander. “This clean up has done more than clean up pollution—it’s given confidence and motivation for many to also create positive change.”

Following the Dec. 28 event, the Clean Up Cowells program will return to its regular weekly schedule on Feb. 1, 2015.
