Structure Fire at Grey Bears

TYPE OF INCIDENT: Structure fire

LOCATION OF INCIDENT: 2710 Chanticleer Ave

OCCUPANT/OWNER OF PROPERTY: Grey Bears

BRIEF SCENARIO OF INCIDENT: SCR911 received multiple calls this afternoon reporting a fire at the Grey Bears Thrift Shop. Callers reported seeing smoke and flames coming from the building. A thick column of black smoke could be seen several blocks away. Central Fire District and Santa Cruz City Fire Department personnel were dispatched to the scene. Central Fire’s truck, 3472, was the first to arrive on scene and confirmed that smoke and flame had breached the roof and North side of the building. The truck’s crew made an initial attack on the fire as several engines arrived. Firefighters contained the fire to the building of origin and prevented fire from spreading to adjacent buildings. A second alarm assignment was called for, but the fire was brought under control shortly thereafter. The second alarm assignment was cancelled except for one engine from Aptos La Selva Fire District. The building was reported to be vacant and locked at the time that the fire was discovered. Grey Bears employees had reported smelling smoke in the area earlier, but were unable to determine its location. A short while later, employees saw smoke coming from the roof of the thrift store. Two employees forced entry into the store and attempted to extinguish the fire with fire extinguishers. Another employee made a 911 call. Grey Bears employees retreated from building, without injury, as they were overwhelmed by the fire. The fire appears to have originated in a workshop area. The cause has yet to be determined.
