Procedural Justice and Implicit Bias

policing_sheriffs-team Policing Times Publishing Group Inc tpgonlinedaily.comRespect, listening, neutrality and trust are cornerstones of the Sheriff’s Office 21st Century policing ideals and encapsulate the essence of procedural justice within law enforcement. Equally important is guarding against implicit bias.

Later this month two representatives of the Sheriff’s Office Lt. Jim Ross and Deputy Daniel Cruz along with community representative and Sheriff’s Advisory Team member Claudia Llamas will attend a course on Implicit Bias and Procedural Justice taught by the California Department of Justice.

The purpose of this course is to provide these representatives the tools necessary to teach procedural justice and implicit bias concepts to the staff of the Sheriff’s Office.

This will enhance law enforcement to fairly enforce laws across the demographic spectrum of Santa Cruz County. Current stop data analyzed mirrors very closely current demographic census figures. The Sheriff believes this training will assist the department in its enforcement practices. Information and demographic data reflective of the Sheriff’s Department impartial, transparent application of the law can be found at http://21stcenturypolicing.us/

The Sheriff’s Department believes in providing the best service they can to our community and those that visit our county. This training and the subsequent trainings to follow will better equip Sheriff’s Department Deputies and staff in being the law enforcement leaders the public expects and relies upon.
