Presented by Cabrillo Theatre Arts ● Play Runs November 9 through 24 at the Cabrillo Crocker Theater
Cabrillo College’s Theatre Arts Department presents the hilarious Tony Award-winning (Best Book) Broadway musical, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, written by William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin.
The musical is a tale of over-achievers’ angst as they compete for the spelling championship of a lifetime. The stakes are high for six young, quirky students at the annual spelling bee—not the classroom variety, but the bound-for-Nationals variety. The comedy ensues as the students put themselves in the cross hairs of embarrassment, ridicule and disappointment. In the process, they discover who they are and what is of value to them in this family-fun show.
The Cabrillo Theatre Arts department production promises to be a presentation that includes everyone—even the audience. “Actors will speak directly to the audience and perform improvised dialog which comments on the action in the moment,” explains director Kathryn Adkins. “Members of the audience will get to actively participate as competitors, family members and supporters of the contestants along with the cast.” Audience members will also be able to participate via a reporter and cameraperson from the cast, who will interview and video audience members. The video will be shown in the lobby during subsequent performances.
