WATSONVILLE — More than 1,200 graduating high school seniors across Pajaro Valley Unified School District (PVUSD) are one step closer to earning a college degree after the district submitted 1,207 verified student records to the California State University (CSU) Office of the Chancellor for consideration for direct admission processing.
The submission was completed a full week ahead of the state deadline. This marks PVUSD’s inaugural participation in the groundbreaking CSU Direct Admissions Program.
Designed to remove traditional application barriers, the program automatically matches eligible high school seniors with available seats across participating CSU campuses statewide. The district’s verification process revealed that more than 68% of reviewed seniors met direct eligibility benchmarks:
- 483 students (Category 1): Fully CSU eligible for direct admission across 17 CSU campuses.
- 346 students (Category 2): On the cusp of full CSU eligibility, with clear, actionable steps identified to finalize their qualification before graduation.
- 378 students (Category 3): Positioned with direct transfer pathways to partner community colleges with guaranteed transition routes to a four-year university.
The student records represent six PVUSD high school sites: Aptos High School, Pajaro Valley High School, Watsonville High School, Diamond Technology Institute (DTI), New School and Renaissance High School.
“This is a milestone moment for our students and families,” said Heather Contreras, PVUSD superintendent of schools. “By proactively clearing the path to higher education, we are telling more than 1,200 of our seniors that college isn’t just a distant dream; it is an accessible reality. This effort reflects our relentless commitment to equity, student achievement and preparing every PVUSD graduate for lifelong success.”
The massive data verification project was spearheaded by district counseling program leadership in collaboration with high school teams across the district. To ensure long-term sustainability, district leaders established a standardized operating procedure that will ensure the submission for future PVUSD graduating classes occurs smoothly each year.
“Reaching this benchmark ahead of schedule required an incredible lift from our school counselors, site administrators and district team,” said Julie Edwards, director of Strategic Educational Options for PVUSD. “To see hundreds of our students immediately qualify for direct admission to 17 universities is deeply inspiring. Our team worked tirelessly to ensure every eligible senior was accounted for so that when these official CSU letters hit their mailboxes, our students know their hard work paid off.”
The CSU Chancellor’s Office will begin issuing official direct admission notifications directly to qualifying PVUSD students by mail in the coming weeks.
