A bicyclist died after being struck by a pickup truck Sept. 11 on Soquel Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officers responded to the crash east of Porter Street at about 3:46 p.m. A 41-year-old Santa Cruz man was driving a white 2017 Chevrolet Silverado southbound when it collided with a bicyclist traveling in the same direction, the CHP said.
The bicyclist suffered major injuries and was taken to a hospital, where he died despite lifesaving efforts. The pickup driver was not injured, but was arrested, and investigators are examining whether alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash. The cause remains under investigation.
“The CHP extends our deepest sympathies to the victims’ families who lost their loved ones in this preventable tragedy,” CHP Santa Cruz Area commander Capt. Grant Boles said. “DUI crashes are preventable.”
Anyone with information is asked to call CHP dispatch at 831-796-2160. The Santa Cruz County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office will release the bicyclist’s identity.
