Bicyclist in Aptos Crash Dies

UPDATE: The deceased has been identified as Joshua King, 48, of Santa Cruz

A 48-year-old man on a bicycle speeding down Rio Del Mar Boulevard on a clear and sunny Friday afternoon died after he collided with two vehicles in the Esplanade parking area, CHP reports.

The man was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later, according to CHP Officer Gutierrez.

The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet, he added, and alcohol and drugs are being investigated as contributing factors to the collision.

Gutierrez estimated the cyclist was going 25-30 miles per hour on the steep downhill grade.

The bicyclist crashed into a 2019 blue Toyota Avalon and a 1996 white Chevrolet 3500 pickup, Gutierrez reported. The collision, which took place at 12:20 p.m., is still under investigation.
