Nearly 9,000 firefighters remain committed to the 10 active major wildfires burning California. Thanks to the efforts by firefighters, progress is being made on the fires and several are estimated to be fully contained in the next few days. While a majority of the large wildfires are burning on federal land, CAL FIRE and local fire departments continue to support the US Forest Service with fire resources.
Nearly 4,200 firefighters continue to battle the Rim Fire near Yosemite National Park that has grown to just over 187,000 acres and is now 23% contained. The Rim Fire remains the 7th largest wildfire in California’s recorded history.
One of the leading causes of wildfires in California is powered equipment use like lawnmowers used on dry grass. One spark from the metal blade on a rock can spark a wildfire.
