Jim Schwenterley, owner of the Nickelodeon’s Aptos Cinema (122 Rancho Del Mar) told us that this weekend, starting Friday October 18 they are launching the theater’s new digital projection system with includes a state of the art Dolby 3D experience. “The 3D will be in the large 400 seat theater. We are very appreciative that we were able to negotiate a 2-year lease with Safeway, which allows us to make these improvements to the theaters for our customers.”
All movie theaters are having to switch to the digital format, film is finally being retired. “Instead of plates of 35mm film, the digital format is on a hard drive that looks like a picnic cooler,” according to Schwenterley.
This marks the first phase of improvements taking place soon to be followed by the installation of plush new seats in both theaters. Schwenterley said, “The new seating is wider with more space between rows providing lots of legroom and allowing people to get past without making you stand up. In fact, to give our customers more comfort the number of seats will be reduced in the large theater to about 300. The new seats are scheduled to be installed just before Thanksgiving just in time for the holiday season.”
To introduce the new 3D system, this Friday (Oct 18) Aptos Cinema will present Gravity, an award winning new Sci-Fi, suspense drama directed by Oscar nominee Alfonso Cuaron, starring Oscar winners Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in Digital 3D.
“We are offering this a regular prices – without the usual surcharge – so people won’t have to pay extra for the 3D experience,” said Schwenterley.
This is a great chance to check out the changes taking place, and to see Gravity the way it’s meant to be seen.
