City of Santa Cruz Advises Preparation for Next Storm Event

Storm Event Times Publishing Group Inc tpgonlinedaily.comSANTA CRUZ — Given the National Weather Service prediction of a Flash Flood Watch beginning late tonight through early Friday morning, the City of Santa Cruz advises that all residents and business owners prepare now for intense rain and possible flooding.

The City and community have well prepared for the recent series of storms with few issues reported. Given tonight’s storm forecast, City staff continue to vigilantly inspect and clean the storm water collection and pumping system with extra efforts focused on the areas prone to flooding and the community is advised to prepare their personal property and family for heavy rainfall.

“A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions are favorable for sudden onset intense rain and localized flooding,” said City of Santa Cruz Emergency Services Manager Paul Horvat. “Residents should be aware of how quickly conditions can change. Although the San Lorenzo River is currently well below flood stage, everyone should stay away from the river levee.”

The City advises that residents in low-lying areas prepare now with sandbags and have an emergency procedure in place. The City offers free sandbags and a detailed storm preparation brochure can be downloaded from the City’s website.

Free sandbags may be picked up by City of Santa Cruz residents and business owners at two locations:

Free sand to fill the bags is provided at Harvey West Park, 326 Evergreen St. at the entrance to the parks yard opposite Evergreen Cemetery. Residents are advised to bring a shovel. Information on stacking and placing sandbags is available on the City’s website.

The City’s storm preparation brochure is available for download in both English and Spanish at www.cityofsantacruz.com/emergencystormpreparation. Critical preparation advice includes:
