30th Anniversary Season
Inna Faliks & Ellen Bass
MUSIC/WORDS
Sunday, February 22, 4 p.m. Peace United Church, 900 High Street, Santa Cruz, CA
Ellen Bass, Santa Cruz’s Poet Laureate, will collaborate with Inna Faliks, world-renowned concert pianist from New York City. Ms. Falik brings her “Music/Words” project to Santa Cruz with Ellen Bass reading her personal poetry before each piece played by Inna Faliks, to include the music of Mozart, Brahms and Liszt.
Ellen Bass’s poetry has been published in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The American Poetry Review, along with hundreds of other publications. She has been interviewed by the New York Times, Psychology Today, and the PBS News Hour.
Her latest poetry book, Like a Beggar, which she worked on for seven years, was published by Copper Canyon Press in 2014. In praise of the book, on a New Yorker podcast, Pulitzer Prize winner Philip Levine said, “She is a poet with terrific power.”
After Inna Faliks’ acclaimed teenage debuts with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and at the Gilmore Festival, she has performed thousands of recitals and concerti on many prestigious stages in the United States as well as in France, Italy, Switzerland, Ukraine, Estonia, Japan, and Russia. Critics describe her playing as “riveting passion, playfulness” (Baltimore Sun), “poetry and panoramic vision” (Washington Post), and describe her as “a concert pianist of the highest order” (Chicago WTTW).
