If you had to evacuate your home or business, how would you know?

With wildfire evacuations currently taking place in some parts of California, how to get notified about evacuation orders should be at the top of your mind. The most common way residents and businesses receive evacuation orders are through the reverse 9-1-1 system on a landline phone.

But what if you don’t have a landline phone? Or you’re away from home when the evacuation order is given? Luckily, there’s an opt-in option for mobile device and VIOP phone users called CodeRED that allows 9-1-1 dispatchers to send a reverse 9-1-1 message to your mobile device.

You must opt-in to receive reverse 9-1-1 messages via a mobile device or VOIP phone. If you don’t sign up, you will not receive messages from CodeRED.

What is CodeRED?

CodeRED is an Emergency Notification system used by Santa Cruz Regional 9-1-1 dispatch personnel. The CodeRED notification system sends important messages to residents and businesses within Santa Cruz & San Benito Counties in the event of emergency situations or critical community alerts. The system has the capability of sending thousands of messages in a very short time based on geographic location of an incident. Examples of notifications include: evacuations, bio-terrorism alerts, missing person reports, and severe weather alerts.

How do I sign up?

You can register your cellular or VIOP phone through the enrollment portal online at this link: https://public.coderedweb.com/CNE/en-US/218A80E36F49.

You can also enroll by downloading the CodeRED mobile app in the App Store

You can sign up to receive alerts for multiple addresses (i.e. alerts for your residence, alerts for your workplace, alerts for your child’s school, etc.). You can edit or cancel your enrollment at any time.
