The City of Capitola invites residents, business owners, and community members to a special community meeting 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, at the New Brighton Middle School Performing Arts Center. The topic: Shaping the future of Capitola Wharf.
The city says this event is part of an inclusive and interactive planning process that explores seven design options, each developed to reflect a range of community values, priorities, and possibilities.
They range from keeping the fishing concession, rental boats and boat hoist as is, replacing the fishing concession and boat rental with 4 mobile vendors and picnic tables, replacing the fishing concession with a larger building containing boat storage and boat repair, larger fishing concession with four mobile vendors, an open air market instead of mobile vendors and the most expensive, a permanent restaurant next to the larger fishing concession.
In September 2024, Capitola City Council approved an outreach, planning, and design contract with Fuse Architecture for a Capitola Wharf Master Plan. Now, with seven design options as a framework for community discussions, the goal is to gather broad public feedback to help guide Capitola City Council’s selection of a preferred direction.
Whether your priorities are sustainability, accessibility, aesthetics, or functionality, this is your chance to help influence a plan that reflects what matters most to you.
The City is committed to creating a space that serves everyone, and your input is essential to that goal. An online survey designed to collect specific feedback will be live for the month of May, and is posted at the City of Capitola’s website at www.cityofcapitola.org.
Residents are encouraged to take the online survey while it is open this month.
To provide input in person, attend the community meeting May 20.
Attendees will have the opportunity to review all seven design options, speak directly with project staff and design consultants, and share their thoughts in an interactive setting.
Afterward, city staff will evaluate the feedback and present it to City Council, who will then provide direction to Fuse Architecture to refine the preferred design option, or a hybrid of options, accordingly.
A final Wharf Master Plan will be presented to the City Council in the fall.
