June 12 Outreach on SB9, Ban of Single-family Zoning

The County of Santa Cruz’s Department of Community Development & Infrastructure is hosting a virtual public outreach meeting from 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, to discuss the implementing Senate Bill 9 (SB9), a new law that essentially eliminates single-family zoning.

SB 9 allows for two-unit developments and dividing a lot into two separate parcels for a total of four units (including accessory dwelling units).

A 2021 analysis by the UC Berkeley Terner Center estimated that 700,000 new homes would be newly feasible to build if SB 9 passed but analysts expect fewer homes to be built because of high construction costs, lack of expertise with homebuilding, restrictions such as setbacks, height limits and affordable housing requirements created by local governments. This meeting about SB9 aims to inform the community about the ordinance and gather feedback from stakeholders.
