Mural-in-a-Day Project

MURAL-IN-A-DAY PROJECT TAKING PLACE SATURDAY AND SUNDAY,

AUGUST 3-4, 2013 (Beginning at 9:00am at north facing wall of the Scotts Valley Library, 251 King’s Village Road, Scotts Valley)

SCOTTS VALLEY  – The Regional Artisans Association is coordinating its third Mural-in-a-Day community event on Saturday and Sunday, August 3rd and 4th, from 9:00 a.m to 6:00 p.m.  Up to 50 artists and community volunteers will work together to put up this Summer’s winning mural design on the side of the Scotts Valley Library, across the street from the Community Center. The winning design for this mural was submitted by Santa Cruz artist Jen Raynes, who will be the “Master Muralist” for this event. Additional design elements by Santa Cruz artist Aidan McCarthy will also be included in the final mural.

At 21 feet high by 100 feet long, this will be the largest mural completed to date in Scotts Valley.  The theme for this mural is “Remembering Sky Park Airport.” From 1947 to 1983, Sky Park Municipal Airport operated in Scotts Valley where Sky Park playground and playing fields now stand. One of the airport’s original primary purposes was to provide a facility for the training of pilots under the terms of the G.I. Bill.  The airport runway also hosted drag races and motorcycle races in the 1950’s, as well as countless air shows over the years.  It is also where Steve Wozniak famously crashed his Beechcraft Bonanza while taking off in 1983.

The goal of the Mural-in-a-Day Project is to highlight the creativity and talent that exists in our county in a very public arena; to involve our “non-artist” community members in helping to create the public art that they will then be exposed to every day; and to help make public art a centerpiece of our downtown business districts while highlighting some of the rich history and motifs of our County’s unique communities.

Inspired by other mural projects throughout small-town California, the Mural-in-a-Day Project was launched in April of 2012 as part of a broader effort to help make Santa Cruz County a nationally recognized art destination center. A winning mural design based on a particular theme is chosen by a jury of local artists and community leaders, and that winning designer becomes the “Master Muralist.” Our two other completed murals are the “Scotts Valley at the Movies” mural on the side of the Cinelux Theater and the “Remembering Kings Market” mural on the side of the Nob Hill building
