Due to the current statewide stay-at-home order, there is an unprecedented need in our region for devices to support remote learning and work. Local non-profit Loaves, Fishes and Computers (LFC) has already provided 964 devices since mid-March but urgently requires more equipment to satisfy the needs of our community, especially for families with school children, students in higher education institutions, and those facing isolation with limited means of communicating with family and friends, and access to important health, educational, employment, social service, and government resources.
LFC has been designated an essential business, working diligently now with its 5-person staff and without its usual 40-50 volunteers who help to accept, refurbish, and assist clients. Therefore, during our Shelter-in-Place mandate, LFC can now only accept bulk donations from businesses, schools, school districts, and agencies. Computers and printers 5 years or younger can be refurbished and re-allocated to low-income individuals, families, seniors, people with disabilities, and veterans. LFC will take a variety of different devices and takes care of completely erasing the hard drive per Department of Defense standards.
Please save your individual computers and printers for a later date, when LFC can readily accept these!
LFC has an additional 200+ computers available for distribution at prices from $35 – $50 for Chromebooks and $59-$119 for desktops. Computers are available on Fridays and Saturdays from 11 am-2 pm at their headquarters at 938 S. Main Street in Salinas. Please phone beforehand. Only debit/credit/pre-paid cards are accepted for purposes of safe practice. Pre-paid cards are available at local stores, such as CVS.
Loaves, Fishes and Computers’ (LFC) purpose is to help local individuals and families overcome the digital and economic divides by providing low-cost computer systems, digital literacy classes, hands-on technology workshops, and technology assistance/ repair for low-income individuals and nonprofit organizations, while providing volunteers an encouraging and gratifying place to learn about Computer Science and Information Technology.
