The Santa Cruz Police Department is investigating a suspected gang-motivated shooting in the area of Third St.
On Sunday, Dec. 8, at approximately 9 p.m., the SCPD responded to three separate reports of gunshots in the area of Third St and Front St, as well the area of Cowells Beach.
During the investigation, 4 bullet casings were located, and a light pole near Cowells Beach appeared to have been hit by a bullet. Witnesses reported seeing two cars driving at a high rate of speed, possibly chasing each other when the gunshots were heard. Another witnesses in the immediate area, reported being contacted by two subjects in a dark sedan, asking if they were affiliated with a gang.
The Santa Cruz Police Department has increased its patrol presence in the area, currently detectives are reviewing security footage, and conducting follow up with the Santa Cruz County Gang Task Force.
The Santa Cruz Police Department is asking the community’s help in identifying the following vehicle. The vehicle is described as a dark colored sedan with tinted windows. A witness reported possibly seeing “BL” or “8L” in the middle portion of the rear license plate. If this vehicle is seen, please do not approach, please call the Santa Cruz Police Department at 471-1131 to report it.
